Wednesday's Schedule 10/31

Happy Halloween my kittens, it was amazing day and I am confident that Bobbie, Ricardo, Sydney, Jeanette, Austin, Marissa, Natalie, and I all represented North's artistic and creative tastes! Thanks to everyone else who contributed with supplies and support. 

Anyway, here's our agenda. Be sure to be safe tonight, and refer to the blog with Riah tips! 

Agenda 

  • SSR 
    • Remember North has a chance to win the book competition! Come home early and read a book before next rotation- it's the last opportunity to get on the record.
  • Reader's Theater 
    • Assignment 37 or 38, depending how your journal is set up. Basically, here is one of the last options for your LC groups to choose from for last presentations. Today, Ortega informed us that we will have an additional block to prepare for our final presentations, Also, we have until next Thursday to do any of the following:
      • You can decide between Tableau, Reader's Theater, Song Parody, and Talk Show
  • LC Discussion 
    • Last discussion was today, so bad so sad.

So today was our 7th research checks, and we should all have at least 21 research pieces by now. 
  • L.C. Discussion
Since we switched our schedules a bit yesterday and today because of Ms. Ortega's absence, we discussed our books today. You should have talked about an outside source today if you did not do it on Monday.
  • Announcements
We had some announcements about Hope Club that meets Wednesdays at lunch in Pellegrini's room. Drama club will start selling from food carts next week (healthy food!). We also voted on the sweater designs.

Today's Agenda

  • Ten-minute Lesson Plan Overview
Since we had four-core today, we had no SSR and went straight into talking about the 10 min. Lesson Plan that we will have to do in about two weeks. You could have taken notes, but here are the links to the worksheets we looked over today:

  1. Since Ms. Ortega will not be at school tomorrow, we will have Literature Circle discussions during second block, after Research Check, and will end with SSR. She also asked us to put the Manila folders in number order when we turn it in, to make it easier on her. During House block, we will have some activities led by Jordan and/or decorate the room for Halloween.
  2. We also decided on having a house party, and Mariah has set up some sign-up lists on our house Facebook group, so head over there to sign-up to bring food! Also, Bobbie will be in charge of overlooking the door decorations.
  3.  The party will possibly be on 10/30, the doors will be checked on 10/31, and we will have a house Pumpkin decorating session on Monday, 10/22, at lunch.
  4. From the end of 1st block today, East was currently in the lead of the Book Competition with 17 books. North with 12, West and South with 11.

Today's Agenda

Ms. Ortega mentioned today that she would not be here on Friday, so we might be having some schedule changes on Thursday and Friday.
  • SSR 
We had 20 minutes of reading, and we were able to get up to second place today in the book competition! Currently, the numbers are: 
East - 14
North - 12
West - 11
South - 11 
  • Writing Feedback
Today we gave some Feedback to Olivia's 1st draft on physical therapy. Everyone had lots of good suggestions.
  • Writing Workshop
We were given 30 minutes to continue working on our pieces or getting others to read them for us and give us suggestions, hopefully this time was a benefit to everyone!

Homework

  • Tape your Writing Workshop draft and Peer Review into your English notebook.
  • Polished/Final Draft of WW due on October 27th (Saturday). If it's a college prompt, remember to mention that at the top or in the subject title so she can get to it sooner.

Hi everyone! It's Roxana and I'm this week's English blog scribe.

Today's agenda:

  • SSR (20 minutes, as always)
We were also able to catch up a bit today and reach 11 books read for the book competition.
  • Song Parodies
Ms. Ortega played "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys and then played the parody "eBay" by Weird Al Yankovic. She showed us this because we will need to do a final presentation on our Literature Circle books, and a song parody is one of the options for this final performance.
  • L.C. Discussion Prep
You could either discuss a research piece about your book, or work on a song parody covering a summary of your Literature Circle book. She asked that you only work on this for one discussion session, and you could perform it if your group wished.
  • Song Share Out
Today, two people were chosen to share out what their group discussions were about. Sydney shared a summary of V for Vendetta, while I shared a summary of Persepolis.

Homework

Print out your Writing Workshop piece that was turned in on Saturday, and also print out what was written about your piece in the peer review.

Don't forget to turn in your writing workshop piece by this Saturday sometime before 10pm!
Then turn in your comments and answered questions about the paper that you corrected by Sunday night.

  • Peer Review
               - Today in class we talked about the peer narrative draft that we will be doing this weekend. You will be turning in your writing workshop piece online to turnitin.com. This is due October 13! Also, don't forget each person will be reviewing a peers paper and your comments will be due Sundays October 14th. Please try to make an effort when you turn in your first draft and also try your best to give good criticizing. There will be some questions that you will need to answer while you are reviewing your peer's paper as well.
  • Writers Feedback
              - We read Sydney's Personal Statement for college and gave advice about what she should add and what she did well on.
  • Writing Workshop
               -  We worked on our writing piece and revised our drafts.
  • Independent Study
               -  There are three things that you will need to be doing for this component.
  1. Do the blog that's due in February with the LIA format questions
  2. List your log of hours ON THE BLOG ONLY! Not on Google worksheet or anything else
  3. Lastly make sure you get evidence of your learning service ex) pictures

  • Read a page about the 3 Little Pigs
                - classmates played a certain character from that page and it was very enjoyable(:
  • In notebook- under assignment #19 for our warm up grid, while being in your literature circle groups we asked each other "If you could have dinner with any deceased person who would it be and why?
  • Literature Circle discussion with your group
  • If you had a graphic novel, this was your day to bring and read/discuss an outside source
  • Also in notebook-
               - assignment #23 is library handouts, don't forget to put in those papers that we got from last Friday in your notebook!
               - assignment #24 titled Literature Circle Prep 5 which is due next LC
  • Don't forget to read as many books as you can so that we can win a point for our house!

We had a fairly easy day today...

  • SSR 
    • For about 20 minutes
  • LC Discussion
    • We learned about our Literature Circle group's favorite movie and why it was their favorite
    • We also talked within our group about our books and plots, characters, etc.
      • If you were part of a graphic novel group, today you discussed about your book. NEXT TIME you should be discussing an outside source. 
  • Group Share Out
    • Our lovely Jada was chosen to share what her group members were discussing. She talked about how the character V in the graphic novel (V for Vendetta), could kill 86 people within the span of a few years.

    • For about 20 minutes we got to read while Mrs. Ortega checked to see if we had our LA County Library Card.
  • Writers Feedback
    • Today we got to look at Jada's lovely essay about the journey of her reading experience and gave her good things about her essay and pointers on how to improve it.
  • Workshop
    • Today we wrote in our journals for about 30 minutes. While we were writing, Mrs. Ortega checked our journals to make sure they were all up to date and that the formatting was alright.  For example, the page numbers were right, we had our worksheets attatched, etc. 
  • Progress Reports
    • At the end of the block we were handed our Progress Reports for the month of September. Remember, a lot of factors go into your grades, It's not just core!
Special Announcements:
"By the end of next weeks workshop, you should be ready to submit in a peer review. this means you have a reasonably finished draft!"

"Today is the beginning of our house finished books competition. Go see Ortega right away when you finish your SSR book. "

    • Prompt: What about the exposition of your test have you found most interesting? Why? What is still confusing to you? How can this problem be rectified?
    • Discuss Quickwrite amongst group members
  • Membership Grid/ Warm Up
    • Discussed and wrote down what group members did over the weekend. Their high of the weekend and their low of the weekend
  • Literature Circle Discussion
    • Discussed the Literature Circle novels amongst the group members today. If you had a graphic novel, you were supposed to bring an outside source that all of your group members read today.
  • Questions/Announcements
    • Mariah and Marissa discussed our nominees for the Push Up House Competition and future tacos coming our way.
